At first glance, a piece of Dear Mushka handmade jewelry is a beautiful, minimalist style must-have, but that’s only the beginning. Each piece is designed and made to represent a specific Christian scripture. The idea is that when the wearer is complimented (and she will be!) on her eye-catching accessories, she’ll have an opportunity to share the passage—and her faith—with others. This “wear and share” philosophy has made Dear Mushka jewelry a favorite in Middle Tennessee and beyond.
This inspirational jewelry business didn’t start out as an artisan shop, or even a retail business at all. In 2010, Katie Lewis started writing letters to her future children via her blog, Dear Mushka. She was inspired to open her heart online after her own mother passed away. “Mushka” was her mother’s nickname for her as a child, and the blog served as a way to capture, honor, and share her mother’s wisdom with other daughters in the world. As her blog following grew, so did Katie’s vision. She had always wanted a small creative business that would allow her to stay at home with the future children she’d been writing to. She started making handmade jewelry in 2013, selling her designs online to help finance the adoption of her first son. As the business grew, she decided to use her designs to inspire others to spread God’s word through her work.
Today, Dear Mushka is a husband-and-wife business team with a small and talented staff of makers. The Lewis family has grown as well, adopting two more busy and precious little boys to complete their party of five. Though the company continues to grow, every piece is still designed and made by hand in Katie’s home studio in Franklin, Tennessee.
