Loveless Cafe

A longtime Nashville favorite and beloved Music City landmark, the Loveless Cafe has been serving up home-cooked delights, traditional Southern fare, and world-famous biscuits for seventy years and counting. The Loveless is a nationally recognized visitor attraction, with walls full of awards, an iconic neon sign, and friends in every corner of the country. 

The Loveless Motel and Cafe came to life in 1951, when Lon and Annie Loveless began selling fried chicken and biscuits straight from their country kitchen to travelers along Highway 100. Guests and visitors gathered around picnic tables in the couple’s front yard, feasting on homemade biscuits, preserves, fried chicken and ham. The simple, down-home dishes inspired a fast-growing following, and the couple soon converted their home into a restaurant and built a small motel for overnight guests. Lon managed the motel and smoked hams on the premises; Annie churned out preserves and biscuits for hungry travelers and curious locals. It was a recipe for iconic success, securing a permanent place for the Loveless in the hearts and minds of travelers almost a century later.

Now a full-blown culinary destination, the Loveless Cafe welcomes more than half a million visitors a year. Martha Stewart claimed it’s the “best breakfast I’ve ever had,” and Willard Scott raved about the “world’s greatest scratch biscuits.” What makes that simple country breakfast so remarkable? Three words: Secret. Family. Recipe. The cafe still uses—and carefully guards— Annie’s original biscuit recipe and keeps other hush-hush formulas and special ingredients under wraps. The good news: you don’t need to know the secret to recreate Annie’s biscuits. The Loveless has perfected and packaged the magic for folks to enjoy at home.
