If you’re looking for a treat that will send your taste buds out of this world, MoonPies are the ticket! This beloved American confection has delighted consumers of all ages for more than 100 years. The original MoonPie is a simple, sweet snacking icon: two round graham cracker cookies, loaded with a generous amount of gooey marshmallow filling, and dipped in a delicious chocolate coating.
Whether you’re looking for a tasty after-school-snack, a packable dessert, or a quick pick-me-up after a long day at work, MoonPies hit the spot: sweet and chewy, light and filling all at the same time. Since their origin in 1917, many more flavors of MoonPies have hit the shelves to accompany the original chocolate, including vanilla, strawberry, and banana. Hot debates continue to rage over which new flavor is the best, but pretty much everyone agrees that the original is the gold standard of sweet snackability.
The story goes that MoonPies were first whipped up in 1917 after a Kentucky coal miner requested a snack “as big as the moon” from Earl Mitchell, a traveling salesman representing a bakery in Chattanooga, TN. The bakery obliged, creating a brand new snack that was filling, delicious, and could still fit nicely in a miner’s lunch pail. At just a nickel apiece, they started flying off the shelves and before long, the brand was a household name: the delectable MoonPie, naturally.
It didn’t take long for the sweetly circular MoonPie to become the bakery’s top-selling confection. Hand-held and perfectly portioned, it proved to be just as popular among school children, white collar professionals, and stay at home moms as it did with the hardworking coal miners. When World War II turned life upside down, MoonPies went overseas with our soldiers to give them a comforting, familiar taste of the home they’d left behind. To this day, MoonPies continue to delight, comfort, and fill bellies around the world right from their factory headquarters, still in good old Chattanooga, TN. The company produces about a million MoonPies each day (yes, really) and still prides itself on its culinary traditions, passed down from generation to generation.
